Hi, Toby reporting in again with another update on the nutritional needs of your dog. Previously my dad posted information on how to figure the calorie count needed to maintain your dog’s weight using good dog food. Today I am going to help you refine that information into a more practical use for your dog. You should know by now that feeding your dog the proper amount of good dog food per day is very personal issue for me. So let”s get started. We live in Florida and the weather is almost always perfect for me and my sisters to go outside to get exercise and play. Even with that our activity level varies from day to day, so our food intake should vary as well. Just like humans the more active we are the more calories we burn, the less active the less calories. So what does this mean to your dog? Simply this: If your dog is normally inside all day with very little activity and then you are home because of vacation or any other reason out of the norm and your dog is more active than usual he is going to need more nutrition. Now don’t panic I am not saying to double his food. Just increase the calorie count by 1%to 3% or so. I would stay on the lower side if your dog is on the heavier side and maybe on the higher side if your dog is already lean. I am going to zero in further on this. During the week you are at work the kids are in school and and your dog is home sleeping. Trust me I know, that’s what he is doing. Now the weekend comes and every one is home and now your dog is all over the place and very active. Guess what? He is burning more calories and is probably going to be hungrier than he is during the week. He needs more calories to burn than he did during the week. Now remember the chart for determining the caloric needs of your dog? That is the total amount of calories per day from all sources. Not just the food you give him, but the snacks and treats and hand outs as well. ( My sister Chloe will have more on the subject of treats in her blog). All this must be taken into consideration, but bottom line your dog should be only eating good dog food and good dog treats and not a lot of junk.

Seasonal changes also affect your dog’s (and yours) biochemistry and the way they process calories. Shorter cooler days signal the body’s metabolism in canines to slow down and bulk up for the coming winter. Longer warmer days signal the body’s metabolism to speed up. All this plays into how much food your dog needs. But really they need a good constant source of good dog food that contains good wholesome nutrition. Blue Buffalo is a good dog food.
