Hi welcome back to the Good Dog Food Store. I am Chloe and today I want to tell you about dog treats. Every body loves treats right?! I certainly do. Tasha and Toby and I will literally run over each other whenever someone is offering a treat, or a cookie as it is called in our house.  Yup we love our cookies! Well dog treats can be made from just about anything, and you guessed it most of the mass marketed ones are pure garbage and downright unhealthy to eat in any amount. But there are healthy choices and that’s what I am going to talk to you about today.

First let me start off by stating that any dog’s diet must be complete and balanced with nutrition coming from quality sources of proteins, carbohydrates and fiber. That being said a healthy treat can take many forms. For instance my parents often give us cut up carrot or apple for a healthy dog reward for a job well done. Fresh green beans from the garden are a favorite of Toby’s. My dad will often take strips of beef and cure them making us our own natural beef jerky treats! Yum! Also actual cookies made especially for dogs is always a hit in our house. (I will see if I can get my dad to post his cookie recipe in this article.)  See there are a lot of ways to treat your furry family member with a good dog food treat without giving them empty calories from stuff that shouldn’t be given to anyone let alone a dog you love and cherish.

What’s that you say? You don’t have time to cook a good dog food treat for your dog?  Well that’s okay, because there are plenty of Organic or Natural good dog food treats commercially available that are absolutely healthy for your dog to eat and taste great also.

And just in case you want to do something extra special for your dog here is my dad’s good dog food cookie recipe. They are always a welcomed treat and we are always on our best behavior whenever dad is in the kitchen and we smell what he is making. You will need:

  • 2 cups of whole steel cut oats
  • 1 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1 cup ground barley
  • 1 3/4 cups porridge oats
  • 2 TBS shortening (rendered chicken fat is best)
  • 1 TBS safflower oil
  • 1 3/4 cups unsalted chicken stock
  • 5 cloves of garlic
  • 3 carrots

Mix together the oats, barley, shortening, oil, and pumpkin puree.  Add chicken stock.  Preheat your oven to 320 degrees. Peel garlic and mince, finely grate the carrots. Mix them into the dough. Roll dough out on floured surface to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut with a sharp knife into triangles or squares. Place on baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 40-50 minutes. Turn off heat and allow cookies to dry out in the oven. Make sure they are cool. And have a dogie treat party!
