Good Dog Food: Chocolate is not good dog food

good dog food tasha chloe toby Hi  and welcome back to Good Dog Food Store. With Halloween just around the corner and the fast approaching holiday season I thought it would be a good idea to go over some tips for keeping your dog healthy and safe during this time. As most people know chocolate is not good dog food. In fact in can be fatal to dogs.

Why is chocolate so bad for dogs? Well several reasons, first the natural ingredients in cocoa include caffeine and theobromine. While caffeine is not good for your dog theobromine is the more dangerous of the two. Even small amounts can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs. Severe poisoning cases will show symptoms that include, hyper- activity, tremors, high blood pressure, rapid heart rate, seizures, respiratory failure and cardiac arrest. Yes chocolate is not good dog food.

You may ask is a small amount safe? The short answer is no. While theobromine concentrations vary by type of chocolate and the severity of symptoms will vary by the amount ingested and the weight of your dog no amount is safe for any dog to consume.

The list of chocolate in order of theobromine concentration is:Dark chocolate, bakers chocolate milk chocolate and white chocolate. With Halloween coming up it is important for you to be aware of ingestion of chocolate. Visitors, and house guests must be made aware that chocolate is not good dog food and is not to be given in any amount to your dog. If you suspect chocolate ingestion contact your veterinarian immediately. Try to determine the amount and type of chocolate ingested. Symptom of chocolate toxicity include vomiting, hyperactivity excessive thirst and urination and diarrhea. You can contact the poison control center from the ASPCA at 888 426 4435 for immediate control measures to be taken if your dog suffers from an accidental ingestion. Remember dogs are scavengers and will eat anything on the floor so keep the chocolate out of his reach.

Good Dog Food for Chloe: Healthy Dog Treats

Hi welcome back to the Good Dog Food Store. I am Chloe and today I want to tell you about dog treats. Every body loves treats right?! I certainly do. Tasha and Toby and I will literally run over each other whenever someone is offering a treat, or a cookie as it is called in our house.  Yup we love our cookies! Well dog treats can be made from just about anything, and you guessed it most of the mass marketed ones are pure garbage and downright unhealthy to eat in any amount. But there are healthy choices and that’s what I am going to talk to you about today.

First let me start off by stating that any dog’s diet must be complete and balanced with nutrition coming from quality sources of proteins, carbohydrates and fiber. That being said a healthy treat can take many forms. For instance my parents often give us cut up carrot or apple for a healthy dog reward for a job well done. Fresh green beans from the garden are a favorite of Toby’s. My dad will often take strips of beef and cure them making us our own natural beef jerky treats! Yum! Also actual cookies made especially for dogs is always a hit in our house. (I will see if I can get my dad to post his cookie recipe in this article.)  See there are a lot of ways to treat your furry family member with a good dog food treat without giving them empty calories from stuff that shouldn’t be given to anyone let alone a dog you love and cherish.

What’s that you say? You don’t have time to cook a good dog food treat for your dog?  Well that’s okay, because there are plenty of Organic or Natural good dog food treats commercially available that are absolutely healthy for your dog to eat and taste great also.

And just in case you want to do something extra special for your dog here is my dad’s good dog food cookie recipe. They are always a welcomed treat and we are always on our best behavior whenever dad is in the kitchen and we smell what he is making. You will need:

  • 2 cups of whole steel cut oats
  • 1 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1 cup ground barley
  • 1 3/4 cups porridge oats
  • 2 TBS shortening (rendered chicken fat is best)
  • 1 TBS safflower oil
  • 1 3/4 cups unsalted chicken stock
  • 5 cloves of garlic
  • 3 carrots

Mix together the oats, barley, shortening, oil, and pumpkin puree.  Add chicken stock.  Preheat your oven to 320 degrees. Peel garlic and mince, finely grate the carrots. Mix them into the dough. Roll dough out on floured surface to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut with a sharp knife into triangles or squares. Place on baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 40-50 minutes. Turn off heat and allow cookies to dry out in the oven. Make sure they are cool. And have a dogie treat party!
